THE PROBLEM IN THE ATTIC: WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The attic is perhaps the one place in the house where we have never visited. It has been around the whole time, but we’ve never seen it. However, there are times when the attic may be the source of a number of air quality, ventilation, and heating or cooling problems in your home. While the professionals at Air Quality Remediation can take care of the issue for you, you can keep your house sound by looking for these five common attic problems.
1. Mold and Mildew
Mold and mildew can develop in the attic at any time of year. In Maryland’s hot and humid summers, moisture can easily collect in this warm part of the house. In the winter, condensation can form in the attic since the air cannot hold as much water in it. Mold and mildew can form when the attic has a leak or inadequate insulation due to aging or poor installation. It is best to get this problem resolved as soon as possible, as spores can cause health problems for the whole family.
2. Ice Dams
Another sign of poor insulation in the attic is the presence of ice dams. These icicles hang from the eaves of your roof. Although this is a beautiful sight, it is a risk factor for water damage in your attic, preventing snow from draining off of your roof. Ice dams only form when the temperatures in your attic are uneven.
3. Uneven Temperatures
If you do check on your attic to see if it is safe and sound, one sign of an insulation problem is uneven temperatures. If one spot in the attic is colder than the rest, there is likely a need for better insulation there. Stilted ventilation can also cause temperature differences.
4. Blocked Vents
Meanwhile, there are most likely vents in your attic that allow hot air to escape outdoors. Your ventilation system keeps air flowing in the attic to prevent a stale environment. Should something like insulation or debris block those vents, your home could develop mold or mildew in summer or winter. Call a professional to clear the air and restore home health and comfort.
If you hear little running feet, scratching, or squeaking in the ceiling, you likely have pests in your attic. Pests can be as tiny as an insect or as large as a raccoon. You can kill off insects with a pesticide and rodents with traps, but a professional needs to remove others like opossums, raccoons, and squirrels for a humane solution.
